Staying Afloat

Makoko, Nigeria, has gradually overgrown its waterfront, coalescing into a raft of informal floating structures that houses 100,000 people .  Residents of the fishing community, part of the city of Lagos, get around by paddling long canoes.  But as it has grown, authorities have tried to crack down on illegal buildings.

Caught in the middle is Makoko’s floating school, a three-story A-frame designed by NLE Architects.  The school, which also acts as a community center is perched atop 256 plastic barrels, accessible only by boat.  With three stories covering 1,300 square feet, it supports 100 students, though it also serves as a prototype, featuring solar panels and composting toilets.  And thanks to its design, it compensates naturally for floods.   ~  Nathan Hurst
