Your Power of Influence Day 18

Your happiness is your greatest gift to others.  ~  Abraham

Recycletank

Philadelphia-based waste-management company Recycletank puts microchips in garbage cans, rewarding the cans’ owners based on how much they recycled, which netted an 83 percent increase in recycling in parts of the city – and created a viable business.  Software firm Palantir, valued at more than $2 billion, uses open government data sets to match patients with appropriate clinical trials.

Both companies are the embodiment of a new idea that is gaining a lot of traction recently: that for – profit businesses can accomplish many of the goals that were previously the province of non-profits.  This convergence of technology, societal need, innovative business models and economic profit, called the solutions economy in the book, The Solution Revolution, How business, Government, and Social Enterprises are Teaming Up to Solve Societies Toughest Problems, by William D. Eggers and Paul Macmillian.   In the solutions economy, businesses aim to solve societal limitations rather than just filling a consumer niche with quarterly earnings goals.  The solutions economy doesn’t replace existing economies, but rather adds to and alters traditional economic approaches in order to leverage innovative tech.  The end goal:  a business model with a bottom line that’s worth more than dollars and cents.
