Wise Water Usage
Farmers could cut water use by 10 to 20 percent with the help of smart sensors that measure soil moisture. The Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT) has developed a system to prevent waste.  Sensors measure the soil moisture and receive information from local weather stations.  If the ground is saturated, or it’s nearly dry but rain is predicted within 48 hours, no watering is necessary.

Collecting and interpreting information makes up a key part of what’s known as precision agriculture.  David Zoldoske, director of the CIT in Fresno, CA, enthusiastically describes his invention:  “The system turns the sprinklers on and off automatically only in the places where it’s needed.”  He’s calculated that the sensors help cut water use by 10 to 20 percent.

Zoldoske is developing a similar system for lawn owners.  “They get a signal when it’s time to water,” he says.  “Our research shows that large numbers of people water their lawns both too often and too much.”
